Orthoptera: Acrididae
Gastrimargus musicus
When I first saw these Yellow-winged Grasshoppers, as I was driving along a gravel road, I thought I had found a new butterfly. It didn't take long to realise that my potentially beautiful "butterfly" was actually a grasshopper.
Their wings are bright yellow with dark edging and quite spectacular when they fly. When they land though, the wings are folded and hidden from view. But, even without the wings, it's quite an attractive grasshopper.
